Please Don’t Misremember X-Men '97
This is an attempt to capture some of the many thoughts I had about X-Men '97; a series as dense as it is remarkable. I don't cover every character, nor every story beat, but hopefully my enjoyment of X-Men '97 is one you can connect with. Spoilers of course, and I hope you enjoy the video!

I Was Wrong About Anime After Blue Eye Samurai

Usually, art doesn’t have to tell you why its good, it just kinda shows you. Through an enchanting hum of colors and sequences, you may feel elevated, in ways that only good art seems to understand. It doesn’t have to take much, and sometimes just a little will do its job; that’s kind of the point isn’t it? To be moved unexpectedly. This is how Blue Eye Samurai moved me unexpectedly. Andor's Historic 11th Hour For Star Wars

I watched this movie after having my own visions of how this film should look after reading the novels over 40 years ago, and having the echoes of Herbert's vision haunt my dreams during that time. I think Denis has hit many key notes. I think he has created something visionary, and one that will lend its techniques as an influence to modern filmmaking. Maybe I just had overfond nostalgia of the books for these movies? Nope. I also had read the LotR trilogy long before the movies. And while both hit me with emotional impact, I felt that LotR was the gold standard for how a literary icon should be brought to cinema life. Denis did not achieve this standard. So many things were great, but there were more than a few failures that marred the experience for me. First, I think that the book Dune should have been broken down into three movies. There was more than enough source material. There would have been more time for Denis to do his own world building, and what was obviously rushed could have just flowed. Consider the first movie should have built the worlds of Caladan, Gedi Prime, and Selusa Secondus. We should have known those worlds. I mean WTF. Whether or not they were spelled out in the book, they should have been developed. And not just through the sparse experiences of key conversations and exchanges between key characters lasting a few moments. This is how you develop dimensionally limited characters and a complete absence of world building. All this should have been done at the start. Had we had three movies (.9 hours) for the story, we would have also had time for an exploration into the Bene Gesserit, of whom we completely explore when Jessica ascends to a Reverend Mother. But the story could benefit from developing the BG through world building, and their training of women, their missionaria protectiva roles in early Arrakeen development. All of this could have occupied valuable screen time before House Atreides took possession of Dune. But we didn't get that time. We get 2D characters for the most part. The Shadout Mapes was introduced as a complete joke. And we just never get to know any of the worlds from the perspective of non-central characters so that we only see a narrow view of the world. We never see Geddi Prime from the perspective of its slaves or guards, how they live in subsistence conditions, but do drugs like semuta to blunt the psychological suffering of their plight. But beyond the lack of a trilogy allotted for the content, we have a few major issues which I'll raise without regard of time. But our loss of potential world building is just one, albeit the main, issue: First, the Brutalist architecture of Arrakis. In the book, the city chosen was not the one favored by the Harkonnen for security reasons. Thus, I would expect the city to be free of the brutalist architecture favored by the Harkonnen. I would expect some medieval-sci-fi city filled with bazaars and giant sunshades and flags. At least a Burning Man environment with lights and human activity, Instead, it's a lifeless, brutalist industrial plastic-embossed hellscape. Gurney's lone performance was abysmal. It was character destroying for me, after having read chapters where he performed successfully for large parties. And Chani was a let down from the writers' perspective. We're supposed to fall in love with her, at least from the perspective of Paul. And in the book, we had enough space, or at least, plot simplicity, to achieve that emotional connection. In the movie? No. Why? I think the writers were aware of the "white savior" trope that was present in this book. It was a very real criticism, one that the author was not aware of in the age of his writing. To act as as a foil against white / offworld saviors, Chani is leveraged in the script to be positively hostile against Paul becoming the Lisan al Gaib. Paul is, himself, adamantly against assuming this role given both cultural sensitivity and the carnage that he foresees. Personally, I think this is an improvement to the story, one that helps resurrect it from cultural ignorance. The only problem? Because this was shoved into an impossibly short period of time onscreen, we're robbed of the romance that is the most important part of the story. Yes, we know they're invested, but we get 15 seconds of that onscreen. Yes there's his training. But that's largely competitive banter. After that, it's basically her resisting his decisions after he goes South. In that pursuit of killing off the white savior optic, we are robbed of their love affair. One of the greatest romances in the history of novels. Again don't get me wrong: I believe the effort was warranted. But due to the time allotted (two movies instead of three), it came off disastrous. We were robbed. Robbed of both the romance but also of the hit when Paul took the Princess Irulan's hand in marriage. Thats enough for now, though I have more. Nothing is perfect, but if you read the book, I don't think this version deserves the hype you give it. It certainly is better than anything to have come before it. But I really don't believe that Denis was the right director for this.

Visualy it's a masterpiece. The shots, the music or lack therof. This movie is like Lord of The Rings way back. However, Thimothée and Chani did not deliver it to me for some reason. I fell in love with the books when I was 15 now 39. Maybe the nostalgia and my own imagination is not syncing with the movies. I think I had the same feeling when watching Lord of The Rings for the first time.

The most unexpected masterpiece of the Star Wars saga. The whole concept of the series was so dumb, I expected nothing from it. But then I actually watched it and.... was blown away. I still don't understand how such a show could happen in the crappy Disney Star Wars universe. And probably Kathleen Kennedy didn't expect it either. This was how this amazing show could be made under the radar of the Disney management. If they had known how good this show would be, they would have prevented it. This is why I have little hope for the second season. Now Kathleen Kennedy has been alerted about this show; and she will not allow it to be as good as the first season.

I've rewatched the scene after the knife dual a thousand times... And I still get tears on my eyes from it.. The bgm, the scene design, the direction for the scene was GOAT. it is art at its peak. I had never earlier expected of any movie where the protagonist wins over the whole universe but still its shown as a loss, and the same person is standing as if he has lost everything, and it breaks your heart to its core. The regret in the eyes of the hero. The satisfaction in the eyes of the believer stilgar. The haunting grin on the face of the mother while telling her child in the womb about the holy war. And Chani's loss, grif and anger. She's crying from the inside but her instincts restrict her from shedding and tears because wasting water is not permissible on the dune. I love the character of Chani and I truly resonate with her at this point. What a scene, what an acting, what a score, what a movie!! Peak cinema!!

Only problem i had with dune 2 is Paul's face looked slightly pudgy compared to Dune 1. Chalamet must have put on a few pounds. Also he was pretty pale too. Not like he'd been fighting in the desert for 6 months. They should have made him sunburned. Dune 1984, the first half Paul was white and pudgy in the face, later on in he desert he's dirty, sunburned and slightly gaunt.
